What I’m reading now: The Dark Tower series

Updated: Sep 13, 2020

Been a long time coming, but finally got myself around it.

My first blog post! While I'm not the fastest reader, I've been trying to give myself reading goals every year now. This year was to finally read Stephen King's Dark Tower series. In the past I've only read the first two, and just never continued before. King is my favorite writer, there is no question, but somehow the Dark Tower series was one that I didn't jump on immediately. It could be because I'm not really into science fiction, and since there is some of that thrown in, it may be repelling me. I've always preferred the horror and thriller end of his pool.

I've started the year rereading The Gunslinger and The Drawing of the Three, and once I got to The Wastelands, it was new territory. Some of it weird, which was expected, but was still enjoying the ride.

I did think Wizard & Glass was a minor slump though. Though it was great background filler, it felt too bloated (a common criticism of King's work, but not one I usually have of him) for me. It could've been trimmed maybe 50-100 pages and could've been a very solid book that clearly had a lot of thought put into it.

Since it was technically book 4.5, I decided to go for Wind Through The Keyhole next, and honestly thought it could've been left out altogether. Following a book that was heavy on backstory, with another filler book, just felt aggravating. Maybe it should've not been considered part of the 1-7, just completely separate, yet part of the world. That's just how I felt about it.

The Wolves of Calla was a nice return to get things going again, and then left me with a cliffhanger, getting me excited about book 6, The Song of Susannah.

I'm in the middle of The Song of Susannah now, and not sure where it's taking me.
